Tiredness and fatigue at sea

Published: 09/07/2021

At the Maritime & Coastguard Agency, we recognise the impact that the working environment can have on the wellbeing of seafarers and the UK Flag is committed to ensuring safe, sustainable and healthy conditions for all who sail under it.

Difficult conditions such as isolation, long working hours and being away from loved ones have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. In a follow-up to our Wellbeing at Sea guides, we have continued to develop tools and guidance to empower seafarers as well as shipping companies, to create an environment onboard that promotes wellbeing.

Over the past year we have worked with the industry to provide guidance in the form of webinars and marine notices such as MIN 656, to help understand the long-term impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on seafarer wellbeing, and we have consistently put seafarer wellbeing at the top of our agenda. Our latest Wellbeing at Sea posters have been designed to provide simple and pragmatic advice for life onboard.
