A consultation on implementing recent amendments to the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) 2006 into UK legislation is due to close on 22 January 2025.

The latest proposed changes follow some of the lessons learned during the Covid-19 pandemic, such as the importance of internet access to keep in contact with friends and family while at sea.

One of the changes also strengthens the provision that a nutritious and varied diet is supplied, by clarifying the requirement for a balanced diet.

Implementing the proposed Maritime Labour Convention 2006 amendments 2022 would further demonstrate the UK’s commitment to seafarer welfare, including those on non-UK registered ships that call at UK ports.

Other suggested changes include ensuring seafarers are informed of the financial security arrangements when using recruitment and placement services, and entitlements in their Seafarer Employment Agreement (SEA).

These changes reflect the ever-evolving needs of the seafarer and put a key focus on health and wellbeing.

The consultation will close on 22 January 2025.
