3 September is Merchant Navy Day – a day to remember and honour those who lost their lives in the pursuit of their work at sea, and those who continue to keep essential supply lines in operation.

During two world wars the bravery of Merchant Navy seafarers kept supply lines open, and now in 2024 they continue to act as key workers, bringing essential food, medicines and other goods to the UK.

Our day-to-day lives would not be the same without the work of Merchant Navy seafarers.

We use Merchant Navy Day to raise the Red Ensign in support of an industry that is often forgotten miles out at sea.

At the MCA we highly value our seafarers’ service. Their wellbeing and safety are our top priorities, and we are committed to ensuring seafarers have access to training, development opportunities and support throughout their career.

Our work over the last 12 months includes a new guidance app, updates to the code of safe working practices, updates to shipping regulations and developing the seafarer cadet experience.

MCA Chief Executive Virginia McVea said:

“Merchant Navy Day is an opportunity for us to send a heartfelt thanks to all seafarers, respectfully acknowledging the past and sending thanks to the present.

“With our dedicated coastguard search and rescue service, provision of the shipping forecast and survey and inspection work on vessels, seafarers and their safety is always in our thoughts here at the MCA.

“We will continue working for seafarers to make sure their needs, safety and welfare hold a place in key maritime conversations locally and nationally, as well as part of the global discussion, working with agencies like the International Maritime Organization.

“On this year’s Merchant Navy Day we want to remind seafarers, past and present, that they are seen, and we are, as always, hugely grateful for everything they do.”
