A special thank you at Christmas to the nation’s seafarers

For most Christmas is a time for celebration, family and making memories.

For seafarers the Christmas season is business as usual – following the same duties and routine.

It is important at this time of year that we show our appreciation and gratitude for their service.

While we’re at home enjoying the festivities, seafarers are often away from loved ones in what can be challenging and isolating conditions, ensuring the movement of global trade and essentials continues throughout.

Without seafarers Christmas would be completely different.

For the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, 2024 has been another important year dedicating our work to improving the development, safety and wellbeing of seafarers.

Ongoing activity around the training of seafarers to align with the growing number of electric-propelled vessels, updating shipping regulations and updating the Code of Safe Working Practices for Merchant Seafarers are just some of the important pieces of work that happened this year.

This is alongside the business as usual services including HM Coastguard, the MCA’s Survey and Inspection branch and the shipping forecast. These areas ensure the safety of seafarers all year round.

Maritime and Coastguard Agency Chief Executive Officer Virginia McVea said: "At this time of year, we want to thank seafarers for all that they have done so that the nation can enjoy the Christmas period. It is their yearlong work which brings everything we need and the Christmas luxuries to the UK.

“From medicine and the basics of the larder to the presents under the tree, your tireless efforts make our lives possible, plus all of those who provide shore support and stand by to assist and rescue.

“A special thank you at Christmas to the nation’s seafarers, we at the MCA wish to pass on gratitude and say that as you continue to serve across the globe during the holidays you will remain in our thoughts."
