Ship's Cook Certificate of Competency, Maritime Labour Convention, 2006
All ship's cooks are required to hold a maritime qualification if they are working on vessels operating beyond 60 miles from a UK safe haven and with more than 10 seafarers on board.
MSN 1846 (M) offers guidance for seafarers about how they can obtain this qualification and additional information on the Ship's Cooks syllabus.
Applicants should use MSF 4395 to apply for the Ship's Cook Certificate.
Food safety and food hygiene
All personnel handling food in the galley for other seafarers must also be qualified in food safety or food hygiene. The minimum level of certificate is a UK Level 2. MIN 639 (M) lists the qualifications that are recognised by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.
