Supporting Maritime Innovation

The UK Ship Register enables innovation across the maritime sector by supporting shipowners, operators, and technology developers engage with a flag administration that is committed to the safe adoption of new technologies.

We have a strong reputation for maritime regulation and safety. Alongside this, we are playing an increasingly active role in supporting industry to bring forward maritime innovations such as autonomy, decarbonisation, digital technologies, and alternative propulsion systems, while ensuring appropriate regulatory oversight.

UK Maritime Innovation Hub

One of the advantages of joining the UK Flag is access to dedicated support for maritime innovation. The UK Maritime Innovation Hub acts as a focal point connecting ship owners and operators, innovators and developers with specialist expertise from across the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), helping organisations engage with regulatory experts at an early stage of development.

By providing a coordinated route to relevant knowledge and guidance, the UK Maritime Innovation Hub supports discussions on emerging technologies, regulatory considerations and the safe introduction of innovation within the maritime sector.

The UK Maritime Innovation Hub’s current areas of focus include:

  • Autonomy, including Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS)
  • Decarbonisation, including energy efficiency and alternative fuels
  • Digital systems and digitalisation technologies
  • Nuclear propulsion
